1929 Page and Shaw, Inc. Stock Certificate
Historic candy manufacturer, by 1924 was one of the largest in the world selling over 2 million pounds of chocolate a year. Around 1920 Boston lawyer Otis Emerson Dunham acquired control of the company and began an aggressive expansion, with factories in Cambridge, Philadelphia, NY City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal and London. After the 1929 stock crash, the company fell on hard times. Under Dunham’s direction, the company started to give away one share of common stock with every $2 of candy purchased. In 1930, Dunham and two stockbrokers were found guilty of conspiracy in raising $2,000,000 for company stocks and keeping half of the money for themselves. Dunham would later claim his signature was forged on the stock documents. Certificate is hand-signed by Henry Shaw, of the original founding family. Page and Shaw’s old factory on Ames street is now the MIT Wiesner Building. Certificate was issued Oct. 3, 1929 just a few weeks before the start of the 1929 Black Tuesday Crash that would start the Great Depression.
